Anthropic CEO sees AI fuel growth, not employment

Dario Amodei, chief executive officer of Anthropic, predicts a contradictory economic future. He believes AI will initiate a period of record economic growth that coincides with high unemployment. This prediction goes against typical economic ideas, changing the main problem from creating wealth to sharing it.

A new economic paradox

Most new technologies, from the steam engine to the internet, created more jobs than they removed. As people became more productive, new businesses appeared and hired those workers. Amodei believes AI is a break from this past trend.

The signature of this technology is a radical break from the past
Amodei explains, “My view is the signature of this technology is it’s going to take us to a world where we have very high GDP growth and potentially also very high unemployment and inequality. Now, that’s not a combination we’ve almost ever seen before.”

The automation of expertise
Job losses are no longer just for simple factory work. Amodei sees proof that AI is also changing technical and creative jobs, a trend he sees inside his own company.

Amodei notes, “I have some engineering leads within Anthropic who have basically said to me: I don’t write any code anymore. I just let Opus [Anthropic’s AI model] do the work and I edit it… that’s not going to last forever. The models are going to do more and more.”

The necessity of intervention

In this new economy, the old ways of sharing wealth are starting to fail. If money and AI create most of the new wealth, paychecks alone can no longer keep society stable. The problem, Amodei says, is not about creating wealth but about guiding where it goes.

The money to solve the problem will exist
Amodei says, “The pie is going to grow much larger. The money is going to be there. We may find the budget may balance without us doing anything because there’s so much growth. The issue is distributing it to the right people.”

A new political trade-off
For decades, the main goal of Western governments was to grow the economy, based on the idea that this helps everyone. Amodei argues this basic idea is now outdated.

Amodei argues, “This is probably a time to worry less about disincentivizing growth and worry more about making sure that everyone gets a part of that growth. Technological reality is about to change in a way that forces our ideas to change.”

Enterprise as a strategic moat

The usual plan in Silicon Valley is a race to get many users quickly, where success is measured by how much people use a product. Amodei believes that for a technology as powerful as AI, this plan creates bad incentives that can risk safety and honesty.

The consumer market creates dangerous incentives
Amodei observes, “I have a lot of worries about consumer AI that it kind of leads to needing to maximize engagement. It leads to slop… We don’t need to monetize a billion free users because we’re in some death race with some other large player.”

A business model built on principle
Anthropic’s strategy is to avoid risky incentives altogether, designing its business so that doing the right thing is rewarded rather than relying on willpower alone.
