Read: Nadiem Makarim’s defense statement on corruption claims

With additional reporting by Ghinaa Rahmatika.

Gojek founder Nadiem Makarim delivered his personal statement of objection in a Jakarta courtroom on January 5, the day he was charged with allegedly causing state losses of 2.1 trillion rupiah (more than US$125 million) while serving as Indonesia’s education minister from 2019 to 2022.

The 41-year-old politician and businessman, along with three officials and a former special staffer, was accused of overpricing the procurement of Chromebooks and Chrome Device Management systems by the same amount.

Authorities claimed Nadiem personally benefited from the procurement, which was allegedly carried out without proper needs analysis or price evaluation.

Nadiem denied making gains from the position, however, noting that his wealth actually declined after assuming his ministerial role.

“I lost the opportunity to receive additional shares granted to Gojek executives after my departure,” he said. “I lost my large salary.”

Nadiem also addressed how “almost everyone” urged him to reject the ministerial position, fearing he could be targeted for not having backing from a political party and risk financial and reputational harm.

“I accepted the mandate for one reason – the state called,” he said. “To refuse would have meant closing my eyes to the education crisis afflicting our country.”

Nadiem added that his career has always been about service.

“I would never risk my freedom or reputation for wealth,” he said. “I chose a difficult path and do not regret it. I love my country and will continue to serve it regardless of this trial’s outcome.”

Nadiem’s trial is not yet over. Read his full statement of objection below.
