India’s leading mobile manufacturer Spice Mobile (S Mobility) has introduced the nation’s first shape-shifting phone, known as the “Transformer.” It’s inspired by the newest sequel of the science fiction movie “Transformers 3 – Dark of the Moon.”
What makes the phone a “transformer” is that it can change into a more practical QWERTY slider phone, and comes with lots of movie tie-in goodies. Not only does the body of the phone look stylish, it also comes with the famous transformer logo on the back. Plus, the phone contains movie-related content such as themes, wallpapers, and short video clips from the film.
The phone can also transform itself from a compact touchscreen into a longer QWERTY-keypad device, as shown in the picture above.
At the launch of this phone, Mr. Kunal Ahooja, CEO of S Mobility said in a statement:
The Transformer offers an exhilarating mix of style, innovation and features that is a breakthrough in the mobile handset market in India. With its form changing capability, we have yet again tried to offer a product that appeals to the ever trendy youth, that meets their requirements, yet is affordable. The tie up with the Transformers 3 movie is further expected to raise its appeal quotient.
The phone comes with dual SIM-card capability, and offers a full touchscreen experience with a small-ish 2.3-inch screen. It also has features like FM radio, an MP3 Player, and stereo Bluetooth. The phone’s 1.3 megapixel camera is a bit of a let down, though. All this for Rs 4599 (US$103) makes it possible that the Transformer could take the Indian market by surprise.
The Spice Transformer is available in red and white, and will be available across India.
