US lawmakers have agreed to empower President Joe Biden to ban the Chinese short-video app, Reuters reported.
Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, sponsored the bill and said TikTok is a national security threat.
“A US ban on TikTok is a ban on the export of American culture and values to the billion people who use our service worldwide,” a TikTok spokeswoman said, as quoted by Reuters.
The bill is reportedly quite “broad” and still has to undergo lots of stages, including being passed by the full House and the Senate.
The ByteDance-owned app, which has about 138 million monthly active users in the US, has been under intense scrutiny there over fears that user data will be obtained by the Chinese government.
TikTok CEO is scheduled to appear this month to testify in front of the US Congress.
