Singapore-based mobile service provider SingTel and mobile gaming publisher PlayPhone have signed a deal to push out a new game portal called WePlay. The portal’s launch has yet to be dated, but it’s basically a step into mobile gaming for the Singapore telecommunications giant.
WePlay will be preloaded on SingTel handsets in regional networks, ensuring it will be one of the first apps customers see upon turning on their new phones. It will also allow for users to charge their in-app purchases to their mobile phone bills.
WePlay will also be developer-friendly, allowing for the tracking of metrics. PlayPhone and SingTel have also pledged to support participating studios with marketing.
“With PlayPhone, we have a very strong partner in building a global community of mobile social gamers,” SingTel head of multimedia Cheong Hai Thoo said in a statement. “SingTel aims to bring exciting digital content and engaging mobile experience to our customers across Asia and we are keen to work with local and international developers to do so.”
It’s worth noting that despite its name, SingTel doesn’t have roots in just Singapore alone. It operates in a total of 25 countries, serving an approximate 480 million mobile customers, and generated $3.51 billion in profit in the recent fiscal year.
This is not the first time SingTel has partnered with a mobile game publisher. It made the news nearly a year ago with a partnership with GREE. However the WePlay agreement looks to be more for the long term; here’s hoping for a dated launch and some good games on the platform!
