SINGAPORE – March 8, 2023 – Tech in Asia, Southeast Asia’s largest tech and startup media company, announced a new initiative today to highlight and address the unadjusted gender pay gap in Asia. On International Women’s Day this year, the company will redact parts of some of its articles to reflect the 15% gender pay gap that currently exists in the region, bringing awareness to the issue and urging the industry to take action.

Despite making tremendous progress in recent years, women in Asia continue to face a significant wage gap, with many earning less than their male counterparts in the same roles. Tech in Asia believes that creating awareness about this issue is a crucial step toward reducing the gender pay gap.

The company’s International Women’s Day initiative is designed to promote discussion and encourage the industry to continue working toward positive change.

“As a media company, we have a unique opportunity to drive change and raise awareness about important issues,” said Terence Lee, editor in chief at Tech in Asia. “That’s why we’re doing something unusual – redacting 15% of our content to reflect the pain of the gender pay gap and nudge the industry into action. We believe that reducing the gender pay gap is essential for creating a more equitable and just society, and we are proud to take this step to spotlight this issue.”

Tech in Asia’s International Women’s Day initiative is just one of many ways that the company is working to promote diversity and inclusion in tech. By highlighting the issue of the gender pay gap, the company hopes to inspire others to take action and lead the charge toward a more inclusive and equitable future.

“In a system where decades of imbalances have stacked up, equality initiatives are just a drop in a bucket – well-intentioned but ultimately swallowed up by the broader forces already in motion,” said Tech in Asia chief operating officer Maria Li. “Try equity instead. It’s an honest acknowledgement that the situation is inherently unequal, and that some groups need an extra boost to offset those historical or systemic imbalances. No blame as to how we got here, just solutions to correct the imbalance.”
