Preserve Email Institutional Memory With Patented Technology From Third Sight

Third Sight logoWith customers such as the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Law, Singapore Police Force, Singapore Customs and more, local company Third Sight has been making the rounds amongst governmental organisations and impressing them with its patented solution that tackles the problem of email knowledge management. Third Sight’s technology allows organisations and enterprises to better archive and manage their emails so as to preserve the intelligence and knowledge built up through emails and then use that to their advantage.

Problem To Be Solved

Increasingly, email is the new instant messenger. Gone are the days where emails were carefully constructed >500-word long texts with the customary “Dear John” and “Yours sincerely”. These days, you and I can be contented with a simple “OK”. No greetings, no signing off, nada.

This means that the more we embrace the ease of threaded emails, one-click sending and the less inhibition we have in sending multiple emails (one-liner or not), there is more and more data that is being propagated through your organisation via emails. And the trouble is, when you want to switch amongst proprietary email clients that each has its own storage format, much of what was built up may be lost or stored as a .pst file waiting to be revived, but never will be because it is too much of a hassle transferring all that information.

Third Sight’s Solution

The patented technology by Third Sight does many things, all to do with helping you preserve institutional memory vis-à-vis emails and managing them. In their words:

“Third Sight’s patented solution is built from ground up to recognize corporate emails as a collective of rich knowledge objects, and that emails are not simply files, documents or records.”

Why It Is Unique

According to Third Sight, they say that while traditional Enterprise Content Management (ECM) tools manage content, their solution will bring context into the picture, transforming “ECM” into “EC3M”: Enterprise Content-Communication-Community Management.

Understandably, description of what the technology entails is sparse at best but apparently, Third Sight’s solution will mine your emails for context and allow you to browse them in 3D relationship graphs. So instead of just having “normal” email management features like varying access controls, repositories, taxonomy management, import/export of data etc., Third Sight’s solution will be able to bring the bigger picture into your management.

I imagine mindmap-like graphs whereby the central “topic” is a certain event or product release, and around this central topic would be branches of the different email threads across the various departments in the organisation. (But I could be wrong…)

And for those organisations who are already using ECM solutions like Microsoft Sharepoint of IBM Filenet, Third Sight’s email knowledge archival and management technology could be an add-on to these existing solutions so you do not have to radically overhaul your current ECM tools.
