Game studio 5pb and Tsuburaya Productions have announced that Specium;Boys is going to be a very real game indeed, giving the saying “it’s funny because it’s true” new meaning.
Specium;Boys was first announced on April Fool’s Day this year. However, readers soon caught on to the text at the bottom of the Japanese site that said: “This is April Fool’s Day.” As with most online April Fool’s jokes, it was soon forgotten.
Fast forward to today, where 5pb has announced that the real joke is that they were not joking at all! Specium;Boys’ announcement site just went live, albeit with a new logo and possibly entirely different character designs, judging by the silhouettes in the background.
The site is sprinkled with hints that Specium;Boys is somehow linked to the Ultraman franchise. Tsuburaya Productions is the production company of the Ultraman series, and the silhouettes of famous Ultraman monsters like Baltran litter the background of the site.
But aside from that, we have almost no details about this game. The Specium;Boys site is little more than a placeholder, and the words “本当の”, meaning “real”, are cheekily displayed in parentheses to let us know that the game is no longer just a cruel joke.
We all enjoy a good Pinocchio story of a fake game becoming real, so let’s hope that Specium;Boys turns out to be something amazing.
