Podcast: How to jump from corporate finance to startup CFO
Finance isn’t everyone’s idea of a sexy career choice, but it does bring a certain sense of stability. But what happens when a finance pro wants to jump into the more rough-and-tumble world of startups?
After all, any company that wants to reach maturity does need adults in charge of the purse strings. At a certain point, getting a competent chief financial officer becomes vital.
The latest episode of the On Call with Insignia Ventures podcast dove into how veterans of the corporate finance world or banking industry can transition to a role within a startup. It therefore also offered insights for a founder looking for their very own CFO.
Jason Tan, CFO and co-founder of ecommerce aggregator Rainforest Life, was the interviewee and he detailed how he went from a long career in banking to the startup ecosystem.
Here are three highlights we picked out from the episode:
5:07 – Which skills from banking are most transferable to working in finance for a startup
20:30 – Why, if he were building a finance team in a startup today, Jason would start with the control function
23:37 – How to figure out which financial instruments are right for your startup when fundraising
