Internet of things (IoT) startups are playing a major role in transitioning us into a more interconnected and advanced digital ecosystem. Specifically in Asia, high urbanization rates, a rise in demand for new technologies and devices, as well as a booming manufacturing sector, have all contributed in positioning IoT for success in the region.
Domestic life, specifically, has also undergone major transformations, with many people already demanding and experiencing significant changes made possible due to the presence of IoT-based services and solutions.
The IoT world is on the rise and the Asia-Pacific region is playing a major role in producing some exciting new startups that are looking to elevate the home experiences for users worldwide.
A few days ago — as a sign of things to come — Dell opened a lab in Singapore to tap into the fast-growing IoT innovations in APAC.
This is all part of concrete attempts and initiatives to digitize our physical devices, thus improving the efficiency of our home environment, from TV remotes to your air conditioning unit. Thanks to these attempts, we now do not need to be physically on-site in order to control and manage our home devices.
So forget setting the alarm early to turn the coffee pot on and don’t fret if you are on vacation and the shutters won’t automatically shut. Rather, pay attention to these names below, as these startups are poised to become leading IoT home solution providers in the Asia-Pacific region and elsewhere, already making a name for themselves thanks to their innovative work.
1. Klikr – Hong Kong
This new company offers a simple, functionally designed prop that essentially becomes your smartphone’s best friend within seconds. The Klikr clips onto or next to physical, remote-controlled devices such as TV, air conditioner, sound system etc, and the user’s smartphone learns the device and lets the user control it from the phone itself using Bluetooth.
The benefit of Klikr is that using a very friendly system that gets rid of the daily annoyances and problems which arise from trying to run a household with a multitude of small remotes. Additional advanced options include sharing the user setup with other users and a smart pause/mute feature for when the user gets a phone call.
The promising project, raising its funds on Kickstarter, has more than doubled its goal, which only proves its great potential.
2. Tekoia – Israel
With infrared (IR) and WiFi Tekoia’s SURE Universal solution operates appliances from within the home and outside. Tekoia’s solution can operate a variety of IR appliances such as TVs, cable boxes, air-conditioners and iRobot as well as WiFi appliances such as TVs, media streamers and Philips Hue lights.
Tekoia is three years in the making and has already raised $3M. Since its app launch a little over a year ago it has been downloaded 3 million times. The company has recently released a new version, making it compatible with more devices and further adding a custom-design control panel, which is sure to boost its popularity even more.
