Omise raises $2.6M to launch ecommerce payment solutions across Southeast Asia

Thailand’s payment solutions company Omise today announced series A funding of US$2.6 million led by Indonesia-based SMDV. Existing investors East Ventures, 500 Tuk Tuk, and Thai telco True Group participated in the round.

Even as ecommerce spreads fast across Southeast Asia, payments are a pain. Many people don’t have credit cards or even bank accounts in the region, and payment gateways are clunky.
Omise is one among several startups trying to fix this in different ways. Its easy-to-integrate payment gateway is designed to help merchants accept payments on any platform. It has been in beta mode so far. Now, with strong backers, it intends to go out into the market. It will be launching its products soon in Thailand as well as Southeast Asia and Japan.
It has tied up with several local partners because regulations and user behavior vary in different Southeast Asian countries. The partnerships will also add diverse payment methods to the Omise products, covering all sizes of merchants from startups to Airlines.
“This is a totally new chapter for us. Partnering with well established brands both in Thailand and other SEA countries is a game-changer for Omise to expand into the region,” says Ezra Don Harinsut, COO and co-founder of Omise.
The startup, co-founded by Jun Hasegawa and Ezra Don Harinsut in June 2013, raised an earlier round of funding from East Ventures. With the latest round, it has so far raised total funding of US$ 3.45 million.
“Since we started, we have received so much positive feedback from our merchants that we are now confident it’s time to boost up our solution and make online payment possible for everyone,” says Jun Hasegawa, CEO and co-founder of Omise.
