Are you a fan of MMORPGs who’s looking for something a bit less, erm, Warcrafty than what’s out there right now? Singapore’s RealU has got you covered. They’re working on an MMO based on Tad William’s Otherland series — which I’ve never read — they’ve just released the project’s first gameplay trailer.
As you can see, Otherland definitely looks different (although the dubstep soundtrack is quickly becoming standard fare for game trailers these days). It also looks pretty; that’s because it’s made using a custom build of the Unreal 3 engine. From RealU’s official site:
Otherland draws on the rich universes described in the books and expands the concepts to deliver a truly unique experience via PvE (Player vs. Environment) with over 600+ quests and missions along with breath taking PvP (Player vs. Player) and RvR Region vs. Region) content.
We haven’t gotten a chance to put our hands on the game yet, and I’m not sure anyone has outside the team at RealU, so it’s hard to know for sure how much of the game’s promise they’ll actually be able to deliver on. I’m not an MMORPG player, nor have I read the books the game is based on, but I must say the crazy visuals in the trailer have me quite intrigued. It looks like RealU has built a very interesting — and attractive — game world. Whether they can fill it with players, though, is still yet to be determined.
