US Justice Department still calls to break up Google

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has reiterated its call to break up Google, seeking the sale of its web browser, Google Chrome, and possibly its Android operating system.

In a revised filing to Judge Amit Mehta, the DOJ argues that divesting Chrome would boost competition in the internet search market. It also proposes changes to Google’s Android practices and, if necessary, recommends the complete sale of Android.

This filing updates previous DOJ proposals, removing the option for Google to sell Android without changes and dropping a request to halt AI investments.

However, it advises Google to notify officials of future AI-related moves and allows payments to Apple for non-search services.

Google countered with a proposal that excludes divestitures, instead suggesting restrictions on preinstalled apps.

A hearing on these proposals is set for April.
