Trump signals possible TikTok sale deadline extension
US President Donald Trump said he would “probably” approve another extension for TikTok’s sale if no deal is reached by the Apr. 5 deadline.
Speaking at a White House press briefing on Mar. 6, he noted strong interest in the app and said the current timeline provides “at least another month,” making an immediate extension unnecessary. However, he would consider one if needed.
The sale process is mandated by a bipartisan law requiring ByteDance Ltd. to divest TikTok’s US operations due to national security concerns.
The initial Jan. 19 deadline was extended by 75 days through an executive order, setting the current Apr. 5 cutoff.
Trump also mentioned China’s involvement in the transaction but did not specify potential buyers.
It remains unclear if Trump has the legal authority to extend the deadline again under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act.
Previously, he suggested that the US government should receive a 50% stake in TikTok as a sale condition.
