Tencent launches largest-ever hiring with 28,000 internships
Tencent has launched its largest hiring initiative, aiming to create 28,000 internship positions globally over the next three years. The company plans to convert many of these internships into full-time roles, starting with 10,000 campus internships in 2025, with 60% focused on technology positions.
The program includes five major job categories: technology, product, design, marketing, and corporate functions. It covers over 70 specific roles, including AI, big data, cloud computing, game engines, and digital content development. There is an emphasis on advanced technical fields such as large language models, algorithms, and R&D.
Currently, Tencent employs over 55,000 full-time staff, with 73% of its workforce comprising tech professionals. More than 27,000 employees are involved in technical research and development.
The hiring efforts will span China and international markets. Positions will be available in cities such as Shenzhen, Beijing, and Shanghai, as well as in 20 other countries including Singapore, the US, and the UK. The company has held recruitment events at 36 universities and hosted online sessions that reached over 400,000 students.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Tencent’s aggressive hiring responds to China’s shifting demographic realities
Tencent’s 28,000 internship plan represents a strategic response to China’s evolving workforce demographics rather than just a simple expansion.
China faces significant labor market challenges with an aging workforce and declining birth rates that are already impacting the availability of skilled workers 1.
This talent pipeline strategy builds on Tencent’s established HR development approach. The company formed its HR department in 2003 and launched Tencent Academy in 2007 as its corporate university for employee development 2.
The scale of this commitment (10,000 internships in 2025 alone) reflects the intensifying competition for highly skilled professionals in China, where rising educational levels and changing attitudes toward work are reshaping employment dynamics 1.
By converting many internships to full-time positions, Tencent is addressing both immediate talent needs and creating a sustainable recruitment pipeline aligned with China’s changing labor market conditions.
2️⃣ Tech talent acquisition emerges as a critical competitive advantage
Tencent’s focus on technical talent (60% of new internships designated for tech roles) reflects broader industry patterns where specialized skills are increasingly viewed as strategic assets.
The company’s current workforce composition—73% technical staff with over 27,000 engaged in R&D—demonstrates the company’s long-standing prioritization of technical capabilities 3.
This strategy aligns with industry-wide dynamics where an estimated 39% of current tech skills may become irrelevant by 2030, necessitating continuous talent renewal 4.
