Taiwan minister defends TSMC over $1b fine report from US
Taiwan’s Economics Minister Kuo Jyh-huei defended TSMC after a Reuters report said the company may face a fine of over US$1 billion from the US Department of Commerce (DOC) for export control violations.
Kuo said during a Legislative Yuan hearing that TSMC complies with legal regulations in all countries where it operates. He also said the Ministry of Economic Affairs has not received any information about a potential fine.
Reuters reported that the investigation began after a TSMC chip was found in Huawei’s Ascend 910B AI processor. Huawei has been on a US trade restriction list since 2019.
TSMC said it ceased supplying Huawei in mid-September 2020 and had notified the DOC in October 2023.
The potential penalty could be twice the value of any violating transaction. TSMC has not publicly commented.
