The United States Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on Friday about a possible nationwide ban of TikTok.

The case examines whether the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act can lead to a ban starting January 19 without violating First Amendment rights to free speech.

If implemented, around 115 million US TikTok users might have restricted access.

The government, represented by Attorney General Merrick Garland, claims TikTok’s ownership by the China-based company ByteDance creates a security risk.

The timeline for a decision remains unclear, but the expedited hearing indicates a ruling may be issued soon.
