South Korea fines Meta $15.67m for sensitive data use
South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission has imposed a fine of 21.62 billion won (approximately US$15.67 million) on Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook.
The commission charged Meta with collecting and sharing sensitive user data without proper legal consent.
The infringing data included users’ religion, political views, and sexuality, which was used by around 4,000 advertisers.
The commission found that Meta analyzed user behavior on Facebook, including their interactions with pages and ads, and noted that Meta did not allow user requests for personal data access.
