OpenAI plans to develop its first AI chip

OpenAI is progressing with plans to develop its first in-house AI chip, aiming to reduce reliance on Nvidia.

The company intends to complete chip design within the next few months and prepare for production with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), targeting mass production by 2026.

OpenAI views this custom chip as a way to strengthen its position with suppliers and enhance its infrastructure.

Led by Richard Ho, a former Google executive, the team working on the chip has expanded to 40 members and is collaborating with Broadcom.
