OpenAI, Google push for AI fair use as lawsuits grow

OpenAI and Google have urged the US government to permit AI training on copyrighted content under fair use, responding to a White House request for input on the “AI Action Plan.”

OpenAI argues that restricting access could hinder national security, allowing countries like China to gain an advantage.

Google emphasizes the need for copyright and privacy exceptions, stating that text and data mining provisions are essential for AI innovation.

Anthropic also submitted feedback but focused on AI risks to national security and infrastructure needs rather than copyright.

Meanwhile, OpenAI and Google face multiple lawsuits from news outlets and creators, including Sarah Silverman and George R.R. Martin, over alleged misuse of copyrighted data.

Other companies like Apple and Nvidia are also accused of improperly using YouTube subtitles for AI training.
