OpenAI board yet to receive Musk’s takeover bid, source says

OpenAI’s board has not received a formal takeover bid from Elon Musk’s consortium, according to a source familiar with the matter.

This statement follows Musk’s announcement of a US$97.4 billion offer to acquire the nonprofit that oversees the AI company.

Musk’s lawyer said the offer was sent to OpenAI’s outside counsel, but board sources said no formal bid had been received as of Feb. 11.

CEO Sam Altman dismissed the offer, calling it a tactic by Musk to disrupt the organization.

“The company is not for sale. It’s another one of his tactics to try to mess with us,” Altman said during an AI summit in Paris.

He told employees that OpenAI is not for sale and that the board intends to reject the bid to maintain its mission.
