Meta’s AI research head to step down in May
Joelle Pineau, head of AI research at Meta, will leave the company in May 2025 after eight years, currently leading the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) group.
Under her leadership, FAIR has advanced voice translation, image recognition, and Meta’s open-source large language model, Llama.
In a message to colleagues, Pineau noted, “It is time to create space for others to pursue the work,” and mentioned her plans to “observe and reflect” after her departure.
A spokesperson for Meta said that the company is actively searching for her successor.
