Meta’s head of global policy, Joel Kaplan, said that the company may engage with the Trump administration if European Union regulations unfairly target Meta.

While Meta intends to comply with EU laws, he emphasized that any perceived discrimination would be reported to the US government.

“When companies are treated differently and in a way that is discriminatory against them, then that should be highlighted to that company’s home government,” he said.

Meta has faced over €2 billion (US$2.1 billion) in EU fines for antitrust and data protection violations and is under investigation for potential breaches of the Digital Services Act.

Kaplan criticized EU regulations for harming Europe’s economic competitiveness, warning that their effectiveness should not be measured solely by fines.

His remarks highlight ongoing tensions between Washington and Brussels over digital policies, with Trump previously calling EU fines a “form of taxation.”
