Meta Platforms is launching a new AI-powered humanoid robotics division within its Reality Labs division, aiming to compete with companies like Nvidia-backed Figure AI and Tesla.

According to an internal memo by CTO Andrew Bosworth, the team will develop consumer humanoid robots using Meta’s Llama AI foundation models, which currently power its generative AI products.

Leading the effort is Marc Whitten, former CEO of Cruise, while John Koryl, former CEO of The RealReal, has been appointed VP of Retail to drive hardware sales, including Quest headsets and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.

Despite Reality Labs losing about US$5 billion in Q4 2024, Meta remains committed to AI-driven robotics.

The company is investing in “embodied AI” research to create interactive robotic assistants while collaborating with firms like Unitree Robotics and Figure AI to develop software and components.

For now, Meta is delaying its own branded robot hardware and is testing retail strategies, including a temporary Meta Lab in Los Angeles.
