LinkedIn lawsuit over AI training dismissed

A lawsuit against LinkedIn, owned by Microsoft, over the use of private customer messages for training generative AI models has been dismissed.

The legal complaint, filed by Alessandro De La Torre, was voluntarily withdrawn in federal court in San Jose on Jan. 30.

De La Torre claimed LinkedIn shared private messages with third parties for AI training, violating its policy of using customer data only for service improvements.

However, Eli Wade-Scott, the plaintiff’s attorney, said he received evidence from LinkedIn showing that private messages were not used for AI training.

Sarah Wight, LinkedIn’s vice president and legal counsel, confirmed in a public statement that the company does not use customer private messages for AI purposes.

The case has been closed without prejudice, allowing for the possibility of future legal action on similar grounds.
