LinkedIn sued over alleged InMail data use for AI training

LinkedIn has been sued by Premium customers in a proposed class action, claiming the platform disclosed private messages to third parties for AI training.

The lawsuit filed on Jan. 23, in federal court in the Northern District of California.

It alleges LinkedIn’s privacy policy update in September 2024 allowed user data to be used for AI training, with FAQ that opting out would not affect previously used data.

The plaintiffs argue the updates were designed to hide potential privacy violations and reduce legal responsibility.

The lawsuit seeks damages for breach of contract, violations of California’s unfair competition law, and US$1,000 per person under the federal Stored Communications Act.

The lawsuit, titled De La Torre v. LinkedIn Corp, involves LinkedIn Premium users whose InMail communications were allegedly accessed for AI training before Sept. 18, 2024.
