JioCinema, Disney’s Hotstar merge into JioHotstar
JioCinema and Disney’s Hotstar have merged into JioHotstar, announced by JioStar on Feb. 14.
JioHotstar combines JioCinema’s library with Hotstar’s content, offering local programming, 100+ TV channels, and content from Disney, Warner Bros, HBO, NBCUniversal, and Paramount.
Subscription plans start at 149 indian rupees (US$1.71) for a three-month ad-supported option, while an ad-free plan costs 299 indian rupees (US$3.45) per month for up to four screens.
The merger follows Reliance’s US$8.5 billion acquisition of Disney’s Indian assets and aims to dominate India’s streaming market, reaching 85% of streaming viewers and half of TV audiences.
JioHotstar will stream major sports events, including the IPL, ICC tournaments, Premier League, and FIFA World Cup.
