French publishers, authors sue Meta over AI copyright

France’s leading publishing and authors’ organizations have filed a lawsuit against Meta, the US tech firm behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The lawsuit was announced at a press conference on Mar.12, 2025 by the National Publishing Union (SNE), the National Union of Authors and Composers (SNAC), and the Society of Men of Letters (SGDL).

These organizations claim that Meta has used protected content without authorization in developing its generative AI systems. Meta has not yet responded to the allegations.
