Dutch watchdog probes DeepSeek over data privacy concerns

The Dutch privacy watchdog, the Authority for Personal Data (AP), announced on Jan. 31 that it is investigating Chinese AI company DeepSeek for its data collection practices.

It also advised users in the Netherlands to consider the implications of using the firm’s software.

AP’s chairman, Aleid Wolfsen, said that the warning reflects serious concerns about DeepSeek’s privacy policies and the handling of personal information.

The watchdog emphasized that storing personal data of European citizens abroad is allowed only under strict conditions, which DeepSeek must comply with.

This comes after Italy blocked DeepSeek’s application on Jan. 30 due to similar privacy concerns. Ireland and France are also requesting more information from the company regarding its data processing methods.

The AP confirmed that it is collaborating with other European Union regulators to share information and coordinate future actions.
