ChatGPT tops 2m weekly users in S Korea after DeepSeek ban
The weekly user count for OpenAI’s ChatGPT in South Korea has surpassed 2 million for the first time, according to industry tracker IGAWorks.
In early February, the ChatGPT mobile app recorded 2,025,546 users, rising to 2,092,797 by the following week.
This increase follows a previous weekly user count of around 1.5 million at the start of 2025.
The surge in usage comes after the South Korean Personal Information Protection Commission temporarily suspended downloads of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI rival, due to data collection concerns.
As a result, both public institutions and private businesses have prohibited its use.
The suspension has led to a notable rise in ChatGPT’s daily users, which reached 855,979 on Feb. 18, compared to 760,766 the previous day.
