OpenAI announced on Feb. 22 that it banned accounts linked to a deceptive employment scheme, potentially tied to North Korea.

The scheme involved fraudulent personal documentation, fake job applicants, and support personas for reference checks.

These tactics resemble those previously reported by Microsoft and Google, where North Korean IT workers secure overseas jobs to fund Pyongyang’s regime.

The report also revealed that individuals recruited others via social media to assist in the fraud, including lending identities or devices for background checks.

OpenAI noted that its AI models may have been used in job interviews to generate convincing responses.

This comes amid joint efforts by South Korea and the US to counter North Korea’s revenue-generating operations, believed to support its nuclear and missile programs.
