Binance secures $2b funding as it strengthens compliance
Binance CEO Richard Teng has noted a significant change in the cryptocurrency industry’s regulatory environment under the current US administration. He described the political climate as more favorable for crypto compared to challenges faced previously.
In recent years, Binance has faced increased scrutiny. In late 2023, the company reached a US$4.3 billion settlement with US regulators, including the Department of Justice and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, due to various violations.
However, the Securities and Exchange Commission’s civil case against Binance and Zhao remains unresolved. Proceedings are currently paused as both parties seek a potential resolution.
Under Teng’s leadership, Binance has transitioned to a board-governed structure and enhanced its compliance efforts. The company now employs over 1,300 compliance professionals, accounting for approximately a quarter of its workforce. “The direction of travel is very clear. It’s one of compliance,” Teng stated.
Despite ongoing controversies, Binance maintains a dominant position in the cryptocurrency market, holding over 40% of the global market share.
Earlier this month, the company secured a US$2 billion investment from MGX, a UAE-based state-owned tech fund. This marked the largest investment in a crypto firm to date. Teng noted that this funding will help bridge advancements in cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence.
