App Annie gobbles up $63m funding as ‘apps eat the web’

App Annie this evening revealed that it has secured a fresh US$63 million in funding – the analytics startup’s biggest investment to date.

The cash is not all VC funding. App Annie says it’s a mix of “equity and debt financing,” but most of it is from the VCs. The Sino-US startup has now raised a grand total of US$157 million in disclosed funding in the past five years. This series E round was led by new investor Greenspring Associates, with participation from existing investors e.Ventures, Greycroft Partners, Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), and Sequoia Capital.

The startup now has 425 staffers around the world.

App Annie, which was started up in Beijing, has become the go-to service when app developers want metrics and insights on how their lil baby is performing on all the top app stores. It covers Apple’s App Store for iOS and Mac, Google Play, the Amazon Appstore, and the Windows Store – plus it recently added support for monitoring Apple TV apps.

Mobile-first

“Every 18 months has been like running a different company, because we have been growing so fast in terms of team size, or in terms of the number of offices,” explained App Annie co-founder and CEO Bertrand Schmitt to Tech in Asia a few months ago.

“It is clear to everyone now that apps are eating the web,” said Bertrand today in a statement. And that’s why the startup is growing alongside the global app economy by delivering “vital data and insights” to devs.

Proving that Asia’s mobile boom is about to take over the world, more than a third of the company’s worldwide business is from the Asia-Pacific region, a representative tells Tech in Asia. So App Annie last year set up a new Asia HQ in Singapore. As a result of all that, App Annie’s Asia-based staff headcount has doubled in the past year.

The startup now has 425 employees across 15 international offices. The team claims the service is now used by 94 of the top 100 publishers of mobile apps.
