Student Sets Off Firecrackers to Protest Crappy Internet Connection

We’ve all felt the frustration of a bad internet connection from time to time. But when the internet on one part of campus at a college in Dongguan began to malfunction, dropping the connection every five or so minutes, one student took things further than the rest of us might. He purchased firecrackers — apparently, quite a lot of them — and has been staging a daily protest at 12:00 midnight every day.

Online, he’s now being referred to as “firecracker brother,” and although you might think they would be annoyed by all the racket, he apparently has a lot of support. So much so, in fact, that the school’s official response is that they’re working quickly to resolve the problem (as opposed to the official response that I was expecting: “Shut up, idiot”). Reportedly, another group of his classmates has also joined in the protest by smashing empty beer bottles on the pavement each night. (In American colleges, that kind of protest is called “Tuesday”).

Anyway, I guess this in the future when Chinese people are upset about their broadband speeds, they can just make a big racket until someone fixes it. In fact, come to think of it, my internet has been a bit slow this afternoon. Pass the fireworks, please.
