Making the announcement via Twitter, Chew said that he would be joining TikTok’s parent company soon but didn’t mention a specific date.
He added that William Lu, vice president of Xiaomi and general manager of its Redmi brand in China, will take over his responsibilities.
Chew has been at Xiaomi for nearly six years and joined the firm in 2015 as its CFO.
Prior to Xiaomi, Chew was a partner at DST Investment Management and also had a stint at Goldman Sachs. His LinkedIn profile shows that at present, he is also a board member of Kingsoft Cloud, a Chinese cloud computing startup.
In his announcement note, Chew thanked Xiaomi co-founder Lei Jun for giving him the opportunity to work at the firm, which was one of the world’s top five smartphone vendors as of the fourth quarter of 2020, according to market analyst Canalys.
