Singapore's Elite Four 2014, and why they are needed in the community

Singapore’s Elite Four champions of 2014 were crowned last weekend at Campus Game Fest. Nelson Lim from 2012’s lineup reprised his role on the podium, while Eugene Tan, Low Kit Meng, and Xiao Liang were succeeded by Theron Ho, Melvin Keh, and Singapore’s first (and currently, only) qualifier for the Pokemon World Championships 2013, Low Wai Yin.

As the Elite Four, Lim, Ho, Keh, and Low are recognized as both community leaders and highly-respected players. They are also encouraged to share their skills and strategies with the community, so as to nurture the next generation of Elite Four players. Most importantly, all four understand this.

In fact, one of Low’s first public offerings as an Elite Four champion was to invite community members to practice with her.

The Elite Four challenge in Singapore was first coined by Ujin Yumeno, the founder of the little red dot’s leading competitive Pokemon community, Team Robo. Following Yumeno’s retirement from the scene in early 2012, co-founder of the Team Robo Video Games arm, Ng Soon Aik, decided to continue the tradition.

Singapore saw Elite Four challenges for 2010, 2011, and 2012, but took a break in 2013 before picking the pace back up this year.

With new admins helming Team Robo and Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire launching this year, it’s likely that 2015 will see another epic battle. In the meantime, keep on catching them all!
