Analysys International recently released an interesting breakdown depicting the current mobile browser market share in China. Not surprisingly, QQ and UC browsers are the leaders, with QQ representing 40.2 percent and UC Browser with 38.3 percent of the active user share in China. Opera takes on third at 11.7 percent.
One surprising contender is the Dolphin Browser which owns 1.7 percent of the active user share in forth place. The fast loading HTML5 Dolphin Browser is known for its gesture and voice-control and is created by a China-based company, MoboTap.
To be clear on its origin a Dolphin browser rep previously told us that “Dolphin is based in the U.S. with an office in China. Dolphin’s parent company, MoboTap, is based in China.”
Globally, Dolphin is hitting more than 16 million downloads. The figures for Dolphin came to me as a surprise as most of us would assume that its users would come mostly from the U.S. The Sino-American browser raised $10 million from Sequoia Capital last year and is now available both on iOS and Android. It was first introduced on Android which is the more popular smartphone OS in China right now.
Besides China, Dolphin has also partnered with KDDI — Japan’s second largest carrier — to preload its mobile browser on all Android phones.
