Meizu VP: ‘We rank between Apple and Xiaomi’

Xiaomi isn’t the only affordable-smartphone startup in China, and at a recent tech event in China, Xiaomi rival Meizu’s vice president Li Nan took the stage to share some insight into future plans and how the company sees itself.

Many of China’s smartphone makers have been accused of copying Apple, but Li didn’t shy away from that comparison. Meizu’s entire team is learning from Apple, he reportedly said, and its products will follow Apple’s example. Li also said that he thinks that in a ranking of smartphone makers, Meizu would fall between Apple and Xiaomi.

Meizu isn’t afraid to follow Xiaomi’s lead either. When asked whether the company planned to move beyond mobile phones and into other smart devices as Xiaomi has, Li said that the Meizu “wouldn’t rule it out.” But he also said that “compared to Xiaomi, Meizu is more focused, and there is still a lot of space to explore with respect to smartphones.”

Meizu’s latest handset, the MX4 Pro, will be released in November and now includes a fingerprint sensor. Meizu is very confident about the MX4 Pro, and Li said that even Huawei’s Ascend Mate 7 doesn’t pose a threat to it.
