In brief: Meituan bands together with small Chinese ride-hailers to take on Didi

  • Chinese food delivery giant Meituan-Dianping has teamed up with local ride-hailing players Shouqi Limousine & Chauffeur, Caocao, and UCarinto to challenge industry leader Didi Chuxing, reported 36Kr.
  • Starting today, Meituan users can use the app to book a taxi or private ride in cities where the three smaller firms operate.
  • Shouqi offers rides mainly in first-tier cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, while Caocao and Ucar cover 25 and 50 cities across China, respectively, according to information on the companies’ websites.
  • Meituan said in its 2018 annual report that its car-hailing service was limited to two locations: Nanjing and Shanghai. Meanwhile, Didi announced last year that it was operating in more than 400 Chinese cities by the end of 2017.
