We reported back in June that MSC (Multimedia Super Corridor) Malaysia would be offering individuals and companies support in funding their creative projects through Malaysia’s Multimedia Development Corporation MDeC. The deadline for the 2014 installment of this annual competition is September 30.
Of the 20 reserved prizes, 7 will be awarded to those developing commercially ready games. Winners for the game development category will receive awards totaling RM 60,000 ($19,000), which will come with unlimited access to both Malaysia’s Animation & Creative Content Centre’s (MAC3) facilities and industry experts. Winners will also be given the opportunity to settle into a “development lair,” a phrasing that ought to awaken the game dev wolf in anyone. We assume that this is basically an office or co-working space, but have no intention of stopping winners from referring to it as a lair.

MSC Malaysia has been rewarding the development of homegrown intellectual property in a similar fashion since 2006, and also supports short animations and digital comics through the same fund. While the fund reserves the right to use winners’ work in promotional activities, the rights to the intellectual property remain with the creator.
Developers for any platform are encouraged to apply, provided the games they propose are casual and fit with the competition’s theme. The theme this year is “chic and fun”, so those of you working on a hack-and-slash RPG may be out of luck. More information is available here.
