Monee is growing fast, but can its model work beyond Shopee?
Sea has built one of Southeast Asia’s largest digital financial services businesses on the back of Shopee, its ecommerce platform.
Monee is growing rapidly, and Sea is reportedly considering an IPO for its financial services unit. This gives investors an interesting question to work with: How much of Monee’s success comes from its own business, and how much comes from its integration with Shopee?

In the second quarter of 2026, Monee generated US$1.4 billion in revenue, up 59% year on year. Consumer and SME loans principal outstanding rose 62% to hit US$11.1 billion, while active credit users surpassed 40 million.
But growing fast and building a sustainable financial services business are two different things. Can Monee maintain this momentum while managing credit risk, funding costs, and customer acquisition as it moves beyond Shopee?
Growth is not the same as profitability
Monee is already generating positive earnings. In Q2 2026, its adjusted EBITDA reached US$288 million, up 13% year on year.
However, there is another number worth looking at: provisions for credit losses, which reflect the expected losses on loans that may not be fully repaid.
Monee recorded US$554 million in credit-loss provisions during the quarter, equivalent to around 39.5% of revenue. Sales and marketing expenses stood at US$294 million.
This is the other side of lending growth. Every new loan generates potential interest income, but it also brings the risk of defaults, funding costs, and the expense of acquiring and servicing customers. The bigger the loan book gets, the more important it becomes to manage these costs.

Monee’s 90-day non-performing loan (NPL) ratio stood at 1.0% at the end of June. While that’s a positive indicator, it doesn’t tell the whole story. Provisions can increase before loans become overdue, so a low NPL ratio does not necessarily mean credit risk is low.
Looking at the 2025 numbers, Monee generated US$3.8 billion in revenue and reported US$973 million in operating segment income, US$1.37 billion in provisions for credit losses.
There is no doubt that Monee is generating meaningful earnings. But adjusted EBITDA and operating segment income are different measures, and neither is the same as the net profit that a standalone listed company would report.
What matters now is how resilient those earnings would be through a different credit cycle, at a larger scale, and with the full costs of operating independently.
