Live your Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon dreams with Yulgang 2

Hack and slash or run and gun. However you want to describe it, the action game genre is taking over the world, and MMORPGs have not been spared.

Yulgang 2, the sequel to Yulgang (a.k.a. Scions of Fate), is an open world, 3D martial arts action MMORPG launching in Southeast Asia in Q4 of this year. Set in ancient, pugilistic times, the game is actually based on a popular Korean comic, Ruler of the Land, and takes place thirty years after the canonical story.

Players will be able to choose from four classes – mage, archer, warrior, healer – and side with one of two factions: Order and Chaos. And though it sounds like Yulgang 2 might be another run of the mill MMO, there are two things that set it apart.

If Scions of Fate was a middle schooler, then Yulgang 2 is the cool high schooler. Adopting a more detailed and mature game design as opposed to Scions of Fate’s cutesy chibi style, Yulgang 2 also does away with targeting in its combat, favouring a more action-oriented approach.

Having to actually aim and pay attention to where you’re grinding it out is paid off with your character’s ability to perform fancy-schmancy moves in the air a la Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. In fact, Yulgang 2’s Chinese name contains a phrase that refers to the ancient martial arts underworld of the far east. Unfortunately you’re only going to be able to use your keyboard and mouse for now, though publishers Cubizone have told us that controller compatibility is in the works.

In case you’re wondering, yes! Yulgang 2 is a free-to-play MMORPG like its predecessor, but it will come with microtransactions. The specific real-money currency used in-game will be announced closer to launch.

While Cubizone has obtained publishing rights for Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines, players from other countries in the SEA region will be free to register for accounts as well. There will only be one server for all players in the region, though. The game will begin in closed beta, and of course, we’ll keep you updated on when that will happen.

You can stay up to date with Yulgang 2’s SEA region news by following their Facebook page or website.
