China cuts kids’ gaming time in latest blow to firms like Tencent, NetEase

“China will limit the amount of time children can play video games to just three hours most weeks, a dramatic escalation of restrictions which dealt a blow to the world’s largest mobile gaming market, as Beijing signaled it would continue a campaign to control the expansion of large tech companies,” reported Bloomberg.

Details:

  • Minors can only play online games, like those released by Tencent and NetEase, for one hour (from 8 pm to 9 pm) and only on Fridays, weekends, and public holidays.
  • The state will also implement an anti-addiction system that all online games will need to adhere to.

Dive deeper:

  • China earlier allowed minors to play up to 1.5 hours each day, reported Forbes.
  • State media previously tagged online gaming as “spiritual opium” in an article that mentioned Tencent’s game Honor of Kings, prompting a drop of US$600 million in the company’s stock value.
