Well here’s some bad news for League of Legends fans worldwide who are looking forward to Season 4 and the upgrades, tweaks, and bugfixes it should bring to the game: one of Riot’s production coordinators has said in a public Q&A on the game’s website that Season 4 — which they’ll be calling Season 2014, by the way — probably isn’t coming all that soon. Here’s what he said in response to a question about when gamers can expect Season 4:
I think a little over a month from now. I don’t have an exact date. It depends half on our strategic timing, and ability to have the Season 2014* (that’s what we’re calling it now) code ready and stable.
League of Legends operates in roughly-yearly “seasons”, and the time in between them gives developer Riot a chance to reset leaderboards and rankings a bit to give new players a chance to make it to the top, and also a chance to buff/nerf various champions, fix bugs, make graphical upgrades, and generally implement other major changes that it doesn’t want to push on players during the middle of the competitive play that happens during each season.
Season 4, or Season 2014, is a change that will affect the game globally, and should not be confused with the professional League Championship Series or other professional league seasons, which operate on their own schedules. But the season change, when it finally comes, will be a big shift for pros too, as many of the champion buffs and nerfs are likely to affect which champions are most frequently chosen and played.
