Sleipnir Mobile, the mobile browser from Japan-based Fenrir, is an interesting alternative to Apple’s own Mobile Safari. Having recently undergone an update, I thought I’d give it a trial run for a few days on the iPad. While the experience wasn’t perfect, there are certainly some features here that I’d love to have in a browser.
The tabbed browsing experience is solid, with a bar along the bottom occupying minimal real-estate, and more importantly it doesn’t require much of a reach when you need to switch tabs. While tabs on the top of a browser may work on a desktop, this feels like a better approach on a tablet.
Perhaps my favorite feature of the Sleipnir Mobile browser was the close-tab L-gesture. It was quick and easy, and understood every time. The browser was not without issues though, but for the most part it was a fun experience. Could I use Sleipnir as my default browser? I think I could, at least for now. iOS 5 will be rolling out tabbed browsing as well, so my feelings may change after that.
