Animoca Brands to launch $2b metaverse fund

Hong Kong-based VC and software company Animoca Brands is planning to launch a US$2 billion fund to finance metaverse businesses, co-founder Yat Siu told Nikkei Asia.

The firm has made a staggering 66 investments in the first half of 2022, making the record for the most done in the cryptocurrency space.

Animoca Brands was valued at US$5.9 billion last July after raising US$75.3 million. In early September, the firm received a US$110 million round from investors, including Temasek and GGV Capital, and a US$21 million injection later in the month.

The company also announced the release of its new edtech NFTs. These were launched through its unit TinyTap, which the company acquired for US$39 million in June.

Founded in 2014, Animoca has over 340 portfolio investments.
