UPDATE: As of 5pm local time, JD went above 20 million total orders. An hour or so later, the company said it has now had more orders in 2015 than in all five of its previous Singles Day sales combined. Original story follows:
Alibaba is breaking records today, but its ecommerce competitor isn’t going to get left out in the cold on this, the biggest day for ecommerce worldwide. JD hasn’t been sharing its sales in dollar figures like Alibaba has, but it has said that just before noon it broke its 2014 record for total orders.
Last year, the company cracked 14 million total orders. That means that this year JD already has more than 14 million orders with half of the day still remaining. Like Alibaba, it seems to stand a good chance of doubling or at least coming very close to doubling its sales record from Singles Day last year.
Also like Alibaba, JD is having a very mobile-friendly Singles Day, with more than 70 percent of its sales thus far having come via mobile platforms.
JD hasn’t yet shared a lot of other specific numbers, but it has revealed that its computer department sold more than US$16 million in just the first ten minutes of its Singles Day sale. Most of JD’s shoppers, it seems, are after electronics – the top five search terms on the site right now are (in order): mobile phone, washing machine, Huawei, Xiaomi, and iPhone 6.
The company has also revealed that its smart logistics center in Shanghai (pictured top) can ship 16,000 packages per hour nearly autonomously. That’s pretty good, but with 14 million orders on the books already, it may want to speed up.
