It’s a strange but not an unsurprising pairing, coming from Japan. Adidas is supporting the Japanese team in its bid for this year’s World Cup, and so are several Pokemon.
Pikachu, Squirtle, Charmander, Bulbasaur, Fennekin, Froakie, Chespin, Litleo, Helioptile, and Pancham have been pictured in Japanese home soccer jerseys in a photo on the Pokemon Company’s Japanese website. However, there has been no other information.
Considering the moving power Pokemon have in Japan, one can only speculate that this might be the Pokemon Company’s way of showing support for its home team. The talented Japanese soccer team qualified for the last five consecutive World Cups, and has a spot in Group C of this year’s.
Japan will play its first match against Ivory Coast on June 14, 2014, after which it will square off against Greece and Colombia. I wonder how the Pokemon will be featured then? Maybe each player will have a pocket monster on his jersey.
