The Japanese venture capital firm invests in the life sciences field, particularly in seed to early-stage startups focused on medical devices.
MPI-2 has attracted limited partners including Development Bank of Japan, Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance Company, and The Shizuoka Bank.
The fund has invested in eight startups based in Japan and other countries. It has already made one exit through an acquisition by a large medical device corporation, MedVenture said in a statement.
“Many of the top therapeutic medical device manufacturers worldwide actively acquire startup companies to expand their product portfolio and strengthen their position within the market,” the VC firm said.
Japan is the world’s second-biggest market for medical devices, and it’s set to reach US$74.7 billion in value by 2025, according to a Global Data report.
Launched in November 2019, MPI-2 has a life term of 10 years, with a maximum term extension of two years.
The first fund was created in November 2013 and has invested in 12 startups to date. Four of these companies have been successfully acquired by major medical device corporations.
