It’s interesting how, if you would just change a few words here and there, that most books on sales and marketing could be made to sound like guides on acrobatics or weightlifting.
“This might not feel natural at first…” we’re told again and again, “but the benefits will be worth it in the long run.”
But if marketing has to feel so unnatural, and if we have to do things we’re not comfortable with, is it ever really worth it?
That was a question we put to ourselves in our journey from therapists to online marketers. We believe that making money and doing what is right didn’t have to be competing goals. What we found is that marketing can be natural.
Marketing is unnatural when your only concern is making money and your promotion methods are going to make you feel contorted after some time. However, if you’re passionate about recommending something that adds value to someone’s life, marketing would then take a caring and heart based approach.

For an easy illustration, think back to the last time you tried a really great new restaurant. After enjoying a wonderful meal, you probably told at least a handful of friends about the experience. Why? Because it was a natural marketing impulse with the hope they would try it themselves and receive the same enjoyment you did. In other words, you wanted to share something and help your friends find something they would love.
Marketing your products and services when you want to stay within your own soul-based integrity, needs to feel the same way. The only way is by finding or creating products you absolutely love and then writing or speaking about them in a way that’s honest and direct.
Not only can marketing feel natural, but it should, because it means that your offer is aligned with your values. The more you convey your message from the heart, the more buyers will respond. And that’s something all marketers can feel good about.
